The new Deschutes Central Library will be a cultural and enrichment hub

The proposed new Central Library will be the keystone of the Deschutes Public Library’s systemwide capital improvement program. It will be a cultural and enrichment hub for the entire county, providing new destination services and spaces such as:

  • a Children’s Discovery and Learning Center inspired by fun science museum exhibits
  • destination teen space
  • large-capacity event spaces to accommodate high-interest library and community programs
  • more than a dozen technology-rich meeting and collaboration spaces
  • flexible labs to support maker/DIY, arts and crafts, technology, and other library programs
  • a signature entry plaza and other programmable outdoor spaces.

Programmed at 100,000 square feet, the new Central Library will enable DPL to significantly increase the size of its collection to meet the needs of the rapidly growing and diversifying population. It will also add a modern distribution center to DPL’s system, making the collection even more accessible to all county residents.

Thousands of community residents, stakeholders, leaders, and library staff helped build the master plan vision for improved libraries in Deschutes County through a 2018 process led by Group 4. In collaboration with Hennebery Eddy Architects, Group 4 subsequently developed the building program and design vision for the new Central Library, an expanded Redmond Library, revitalization of the Downtown Bend Library, and renovation of three other community branches. A measure to fund implementation of the master plan is on the November 2020 ballot.
