Garage converted to contemporary design-build office for UCSF Parnassus Heights campus

The cutting-edge new hospital construction projects at the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus will keep a design-build team busy for the next decade. It is crucial that this team has a place for on-site collaboration by architects, engineers, and builders. However, this urban campus lacks space for traditional trailers to accommodate a team of this size.

In a design-build collaboration with Thompson Builders, Group 4 designed the conversion of two levels of an existing parking garage into the Integrated Center for Design And Construction (ICDC) for the hospital design team. Converting a garage into comfortable and collaborative office space presented many unique challenges – sloping floors, low floor-to-ceiling heights, and complex garage infrastructure to name just a few. Our team approached the problem with creative zeal and technological tools such as a 3D point cloud scan of the space.

The spacious new office has hundreds of workstations in a shared open space with collaboration areas, conference rooms of all sizes, phone rooms, and more. The space is flexible with easily reconfigurable temporary partition walls. Infill windows carefully match the window design of the adjacent library building. All-gender restrooms help promote an inclusive workspace. This unusual adaptive reuse project is even pursuing LEED certification.
