In 2009, the City of Scotts Valley purchased a former indoor roller skating rink to convert into a new public library four times the size of its predecessor. The design transformed the building – a reinforced masonry box with few interior columns – into a dynamic light-filled library with an open, flowing floor plan. Suspended polycarbonate “lanterns” project daylight throughout the library and create programmatic divisions within the building’s generous interior volume. New windows in multicolored glass add to a vibrant interior color palette that shifts with the sun over the course of the day.

One of the most popular locations is the teen area, a boldly-colored and richly-textured space. Paying homage to the legacy of the former roller rink, the raised platform with booth seating supports both socializing and collaborative work. The platform steps double as a sub-zone for gaming at the wall-mounted console. Stools at a counter and comfortable lounge chairs round out the seating variety.

The original adaptive reuse project focused on the interior of the building. A decade later, the City asked Group 4 to design the building’s exterior and landscaping to complete the transformation. An enticing new façade creates a welcoming street presence and reflects the vibrant and industrial interior character of the library.
