After 2+ years of thoughtful design and construction, the City of Sacramento’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Library has reopened its doors, and the transformation is one worth celebrating. Local officials, Sacramento Public Library leaders, and community partners recently gathered for a grand reopening celebration featuring a ribbon cutting, open house tours, performers, and family friendly activities.
Group 4 led the design of this landmark remodel, working alongside construction partner Swinerton to deliver a modern, flexible, and welcoming space for the community. It is a milestone moment for a building that first opened in 1970 and had not received a full renovation in more than five decades. The project has been honored as the 2026 Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Sacramento Chapter.

The renovation project was anchored by a $5.6 million grant through the California State Library’s Building Forward program. The grant program helps communities invest in libraries that are safe, accessible, and ready to serve 21st century needs, and the MLK Jr. Library is a shining example of what that vision can achieve.
Through collaboration with the community, Group 4’s design reimagines the branch from the inside out. Raising the ceiling allowed the team to bring natural light deep into the building, creating a brighter, more inviting environment that complements the new, lively interior color palette. New collaborative spaces like the expanded community room and new makerspace give students, families, and community groups space to gather and create. Quiet study zones and areas of respite ensure that visitors seeking focus or stillness have a place of their own. The design preserves the building’s original brick walls and roof, honoring its history while pointing firmly toward the future.
The renovation also features enhanced children’s and teen areas, upgraded staff areas designed for efficiency and visibility, and accessibility improvements throughout. A new HVAC system, updated restrooms, and seismic upgrades make the building more durable and resilient for generations to come.
This project reflects a partnership years in the making. In 2019, Sacramento Public Library commissioned Group 4 to develop a systemwide Facilities Vision, engaging staff, stakeholders, and the community through surveys, workshops, and listening sessions. That vision has since helped SPL and its member cities win nearly $11 million in grants for capital improvements, and it continues to guide projects across the system, including the new Elk Grove Library (adaptive reuse designed by Group 4) and the transformation of the Sacramento News & Review building into new North Sacramento branch.
The reopening of the MLK Jr. Library is more than a renovation. It is a renewed promise to southwest Sacramento: a place to learn, connect, imagine, and belong. Group 4 is proud to help California libraries realize their vision for future-ready, flexible, and welcoming spaces which will serve their communities for future generations.
